Creamy, cool and refreshing: avocado shake
I think I may love avocados as much as I love lemons. Does that warrant a logo change to an avocado change? Decisions, decisions. Today is going to be a short post, I mainly just want to show you what I had for breakfast today.
This shake is called sinh tố bÆ¡ in Vietnamese, which directly translates to “butter fruit smoothie”. Vietnamese culture makes a lot of things into dessert, which confuses most Western cultures. For example, avocados, corn, and beans. Beans are used a lot in Vietnamese sweet dessert soups, called chè. The beans are precooked in sugared water, and then added to coconut milk, jelly bits, tapioca, etc. Eventually I’ll show you guys how to make a spectrum of Viet desserts, but my grandma hasn’t taught me how to make them yet so I’ll show you once I learn =P
This smoothie is traditionally made in Vietnam with sweetened condensed milk, but I substituted that with agave nectar because I don’t want to kill my pancreas and I love sweetened condensed milk, so that could be a slippery slope. You can also substitute the milk in this for other non-dairy alternatives. Coconut milk with be delicious with avocado, but it may jack up the fat content on this as the avocado is already a fairly fatty fruit (but good fat. I promise). Almond milk, rice milk, or soy milk would also be good.
- - 1 ripe avocado
- - 6 ice cubes
- - ¾-1 cup milk or milk alternative
- - 2 tbsp agave nectar (adjust to your taste. I don't like mine too sweet)
- In a blender, combine all ingredients and blend until smooth.
- Transfer to a glass, pop in a straw and enjoy!
